PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — U.S. prosecutors say a Mexican man helped illegally smuggle Mexican immigrants into Maine via Canada.
The Portland Press Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2wiKPHf ) 40-year-old Silvino Orduna-Cabrera pleaded guilty Aug. 31 and was sentenced Monday to time served — about two months.
Prosecutors say he dropped off two Mexican citizens who had been previously deported from the U.S. on the Canadian side of the border July 17. Orduna-Cabrera then drove into the U.S. and picked up the men after they walked across the border.
The U.S. attorney's office says Orduna-Cabrera finally drove the men into Maine.
The U.S. Border Patrol was alerted to the case after a worker found a passport belonging to one of the Mexican citizens.
