MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — A prosecutor says a Virginia police officer was justified in fatally shooting a teenager who was advancing at him with a crowbar.
Police on Tuesday identified the teen who was shot and killed Friday as 15-year-old Ruben Urbina of Haymarket, a Washington suburb.
At a press conference in Manassas, Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert said the boy had mental problems and attempted suicide the night before.
Ebert said the boy called 911 and claimed to have a bomb strapped to his chest. When police arrived, Ebert said officers saw him strike his brother's girlfriend with a crowbar.
Ebert said the boy then advanced at an officer with the crowbar, getting to within 10 feet before the officer fired two shots.
Urbina died at the scene.
