(Reuters) - Katia, a storm off the Mexican coast in the Gulf of Mexico, strengthened into a hurricane on Wednesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said.

Katia is 185 miles (295 km) east of Tampico, Mexico, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kph) and some additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, the NHC added.

Models so far show it remaining in the southern Gulf in coming days.
