MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Lidia neared the southern tip of Mexico's Baja peninsula on Thursday but was not projected to reach hurricane strength, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Thursday.

The storm was about 90 miles (145 km) south-southeast of the resorts of Los Cabos with winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and some strengthening was expected before the center of the storm reached the peninsula later on Thursday, the center said.

A hurricane watch was still in effect for part of Baja California Sur, from Puerto Cortes to east of La Paz, and the storm was expected to bring a dangerous storm surge to coasts while rains could cause flash floods, NHC said.
