BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a 70-year-old New Jersey man was killed after crashing his sports car during a race in Minnesota.

The Sports Car Club of America and Brainerd International Raceway identified him Monday as veteran racer Mel Shaw, of Voorhees, New Jersey. His car went off the track at Turn 3 and struck a concrete barrier Sunday.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office says he died at the scene.

Shaw's body was sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

BIR owner Jed Copham said in a statement that Shaw may have been having health issues before the crash. He said other drivers reported he was driving erratically, and that he didn't let up on the throttle, hit the brakes or try to turn when he drove off the track.
