DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff says he's thankful no one was injured when his bicycle fell from his police cruiser as he drove on the interstate.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood apologized Tuesday.
Several motorists called 911 about 8:50 p.m. Friday, saying they'd just hit a bicycle while driving north on Interstate 95 near Daytona Beach. Chitwood says he didn't realize the bike was gone until he was almost home.
The sheriff told The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/2oWYrbi ) he called 911. Dispatchers told him they'd received calls from motorists who ran over the bike. He responded, "Thank God they were not hurt."
Chitwood says Volusia County will cover the damages to the vehicles.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Chitwood won't be charged because the strap on the bike rack broke.
