METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Sheriff's deputies responding to the call of a woman who said she was shot at an apartment complex outside New Orleans have found four bodies and a wounded woman, now hospitalized in stable condition.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office got the call around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Deputies found three bodies and the wounded woman in one apartment.
Speaking later at the scene in Metairie, Sheriff Newell Normand said a fourth body was found around 9 a.m. after investigators found the door to another apartment open and obtained a search warrant.
The fourth body, of a man about 50 years old, "adds another twist to the original scene," Normand said.
Asked if the fourth victim might have been hit by a stray bullet, Normand said it was too early to tell.
Normand said one officer was injured trying to clear a live round from a weapon found at the scene. The weapon, was pointed down when it discharged, but the bullet hit concrete and some bricks, pieces of which hit the officer in the face. "He's fine," Normand said of the officer.
