How major US stock market indexes fared on Tuesday

Stock indexes sank Tuesday after yet another drop in the price of oil dragged down shares across the energy industry. Other areas of the market saw modest losses as investors wait to hear from the Federal Reserve, which began a two-day policy meeting on interest rates.

On Tuesday:

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 8.02 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,365.45.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 44.11, or 0.2 percent, to 20,837.37.

The Nasdaq composite fell 18.97, or 0.3 percent, to 5,856.82.

The Russell 2000 index of small-company stocks fell 7.91, or 0.6 percent, to 1,362.38.

For the week:

The S&P 500 is down 7.15 points, or 0.3 percent.

The Dow is down 65.61, or 0.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 4.91, or 0.1 percent.

The Russell 2000 is down 2.89, or 0.2 percent.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 126.62 points, or 5.7 percent.

The Dow is up 1,074.77, or 5.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 473.70, or 8.8 percent.

The Russell 2000 is up 5.25, or 0.4 percent.
