US weekly jobless claims rise to highest level since August of 2023

TAG: Correspondent Jeremy House reporting. In total, 1.79 million Americans were collecting jobless benefits during the week that ended April 27. That’s up 17,000 from the previous week. Weekly unemployment claims are considered a proxy for the number of U.S. layoffs in a given week.

VERBATIM: The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits jumped to its highest level in more than eight months last week. The Labor Department reports unemployment claims for the week ending May 4 rose by 22,000 to 231,000. Last week’s claims were the most since the final week of August 2023.

Biden says U.S. won’t supply weapons for Israel to attack Rafah

President Biden is threatening to withhold American weapons if Israel launches an all-out assault on the Gazan city of Rafah. The president said he’s still committed to Israel’s defense, but he would not send offensive weapons if there’s a major ground operation in Rafah. He told CNN that if the Israelis invade Rafah, the U-S will not “supply the weapons and artillery shells used.” Mr. Biden has said that Israel needs to do far more to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza, including in Rafah where more than a million civilians are sheltering.

Senator Graham: Trump Re-election Would Put End To Anti-Jewish Protests

Senator Lindsey Graham [R-SC] says re-electing Donald Trump is the only way to put an end to the anti-Israel demonstrations disrupting college campuses. Graham says the best way to address the demonstrations is to find out who’s been funding them, an investigation he says will happen if Trump is re-elected. He told Fox News   “Here’s what I can promise you, if Donald Trump were president of the United States, his attorney general would be all over this.” And he says college presidents would be under pressure to put an end to the ant-Jewish demonstrations.

The 2024 election might be all about faith
VERBATIM:  People of faith, that is.  Leaders of both conservative and liberal church groups are planning national get-out-the-vote campaigns heading into an election that many believe will be one of the most important in U.S. history.  The National Council of Churches, which includes most liberal denominations, has announced a “Freedom Summer” initiative.  The conservative Faith and Freedom group will spend 60 million to register voters.
