The Labor Department reports unemployment claims for the week ending May 4 rose by 22,000 to 231,000. Last week’s claims were the most since the final week of August 2023.

Biden says U.S. won’t supply weapons for Israel to attack Rafah

President Biden is threatening to withhold American weapons if Israel launches an all-out assault on the Gazan city of Rafah. The president said he’s still committed to Israel’s defense, but he would not send offensive weapons if there’s a major ground operation in Rafah. He told CNN that if the Israelis invade Rafah, the U-S will not “supply the weapons and artillery shells used.” Mr. Biden has said that Israel needs to do far more to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza, including in Rafah where more than a million civilians are sheltering.
