A surge in banks and other financial stocks that stand to benefit from higher interest rates pushed indexes to the edge of record highs Thursday.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 59.71 points, or 0.3 percent, to 19,852.24.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 8.75 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,262.03.
The Nasdaq composite gained 20.18 points, or 0.4 percent, to 5,456.85.
For the week:
The Dow is up 95.39 points, or 0.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 2.50 points, or 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 12.36 points, or 0.2 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 2,427.21 points, or 13.9 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 218.09 points, or 10.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 449.44 points, or 9 percent.
