How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Tuesday

U.S. stocks climbed Tuesday as the price of oil made its biggest jump in seven months and energy companies rose with it. Technology stocks like Microsoft and Google's parent Alphabet traded higher and bond yields slipped, a break with the pattern since last week's election.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 54.37 points, or 0.3 percent, to 18,923.06.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 16.19 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,180.39.

The Nasdaq composite jumped 57.22 points, or 1.1 percent, to 5,275.62.

For the week:

The Dow is up 75.40 points, or 0.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 15.94 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 38.51 points, or 0.7 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,498.03 points, or 8.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 136.45 points, or 6.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 268.21 points, or 5.4 percent.
