CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A 23-year-old man who was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 in north-central Wyoming died in a head-on crash with a highway patrol trooper who was responding to stop him.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol says the collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday about 13 miles south of Sheridan. The driver, Michael Westika of Sheridan, died at the scene.
The patrol says trooper David Motsick was responding to a separate, non-emergency call when he received a report about a wrong-way driver. Soon after, Motsick came up behind an eastbound ambulance, which swerved to avoid Westika's car. Officials say Motsick, a 15-year veteran with the patrol, didn't have enough time to react and their vehicles collided.
The patrol says Motsick was hospitalized Friday in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
