HATCH, N.M. (AP) — The Latest on the slaying of a New Mexico police officer (all times local):

1:40 p.m.

Dona Ana County Sheriff's deputies have taken over public safety duties in the village of Hatch following the fatal shooting of one of its eight officers.

The department says deputies will respond to calls in Hatch while local officers mourn the killing of 33-year-old Jose Chavez. The officer, who had been on the force for two years, was killed Friday after pulling over two Ohio fugitives.

Police suspect 38-year-old Jesse Hanes was the shooter. James Nelson, who is also wanted on suspicion of murder in Ohio, was in the car.

Hanes remains hospitalized after shooting himself in the leg.

Nelson is being held on a fugitive warrant.

A third person in the car was a hitchhiker who is considered a witness.

Authorities say a fugitive from Ohio was with another suspect believed to have fatally shot a New Mexico police officer during a traffic stop Friday.

James Nelson and Jesse Hanes were both wanted in Ohio in the July 25 shooting death of a 62-year-old man at his home just outside Chillicothe, about 60 miles south of Columbus.

Police say Nelson was in the car when Hanes killed 33-year-old Jose Chavez, a police officer in the village of Hatch, New Mexico. Nelson is being heled on a fugitive from justice warrant.

Hanes remains hospitalized after shooting himself in the leg.

Nelson, who also goes by "JD," has drug-related convictions in Ohio dating back to the mid-1990s

Authorities say Hanes killed 33-year-old Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez.

Federal and local authorities plan to release more information about the fatal shooting of New Mexico police officer by a suspected fugitive from Ohio during a news conference Saturday.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department says the conference is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. MDT.

Authorities say 38-year-old Jesse Hanes, who is wanted in Ohio on a murder charge, fatally shot 33-year-old Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez during a traffic stop Friday.

Hanes has an extensive criminal history in Ohio, including involuntary manslaughter and robbery convictions.

Police say two others were in the car when Hanes shot Chavez before fleeing, carjacking a man at a rest stop, shooting him.

Deputies were able to stop Hanes by deflating his tires.

An Ohio fugitive wanted for murder has been arrested in the fatal shooting death of a New Mexico police officer.

Dona Ana County Sheriff's spokeswoman Kelly Jameson says that 36-year-old Jesse Hanes is suspected of gunning down Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez, 33, during a traffic stop Friday.

Hanes fled and is suspected of carjacking a man at a rest stop before shooting him in the stomach. The man's condition is unknown.

Authorities say the confrontation began when Chavez pulled over Hanes in the village of Hatch, about 40 miles northwest of Las Cruces.

Hanes then fled but sheriff's deputies were able to stop him using a tire-deflating device.

Two others were also arrested, but have not been identified by New Mexico authorities.

Hanes was sought in Ohio in the July 25 shooting death of a 62-year-old man just outside Chillicothe, about 60 miles south of Columbus.

Authorities say a New Mexico police officer has died after being shot in the neck during a traffic stop, and three suspects are in custody.

Dona Ana County authorities say the officer was shot by a passenger who had gotten out of the vehicle during the Friday traffic stop in the village of Hatch, about 40 miles northwest of Las Cruces.

Thirty-three-year-old Hatch Officer Jose Chavez was taken to a Texas hospital, and died.

The three suspects drove south on Interstate 25, then stopped at a rest stop, where one of them carjacked another vehicle. Authorities say that car's owner was shot. Authorities caught up with all three suspects, one of whom had a gunshot wound to the leg.

The motorist who was shot was taken to a hospital.
