ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Sunshine Skyway Bridge spanning Tampa Bay has partially reopened following a tanker truck fire.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Steve Gaskins said Tuesday morning in an email that the driver received minor injuries when his tire blew and the tanker caught on fire.
Northbound lanes of the bridge have reopened. Gaskins said the southbound lanes are expected to be closed for an extended period.
The tanker is on fire in the southbound lanes at the top of the bridge's span. The FHP says the tanker is carrying nearly 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel.
The bridge spans the bay between Pinellas and Manatee counties and is part of Interstate 275, a main artery on Florida's west coast.
