PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A teenager from Oklahoma was injured when he dug a hole into a sandbank on a Florida beach and it collapsed around him.
Bay County Sheriff's officials say the 17-year-old was in critical condition when he was taken to a hospital Wednesday afternoon, but his condition had improved several hours later. Officials didn't release the teen's name.
It happened at St. Andrews State Park near Panama City Beach.
Dacota Carter told the News Herald (http://bit.ly/1UDzXrm ) he saw three teens making cavities in the sandbank earlier in the day. He says hours later that a family sitting nearby noticed the teen's feet sticking out of the sand and beachgoers started digging him out.
First responders used shovels, a backhoe, a tractor and large wooden planks to rescue the teen.
