HALLANDALE, Fla. (AP) — Police say an officer fatally shot a man who was trying to flee as authorities investigated reports of car burglaries in Hallandale Beach in South Florida.
Police were called early Sunday to possible car break-ins and found two men in a car. Major Sonia Quinones says the driver, 27-year-old Michael Eugene Wilson, attempted to speed away and the officer fired at least one round. Wilson was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Quinones said the officer feared for his life and was forced to fire. The Sun Sentinel (http://tinyurl.com/zvpza3q) reports Wilson's car had several bullet holes in the driver's door. Authorities say 23-year-old Tyler Shuman, the second suspect, fled and was caught hours later.
Police said Wilson was black and the officer involved in the shooting, Corey Clark, also is black.
