U.S. stocks slipped in quiet trading Monday as energy companies dropped with the price of oil and metals and chemicals companies fell. Company earnings remains weak, as Xerox and drugmaker Perrigo tumbled after they reported disappointing results and cut their expectations for the year.
The Dow Jones industrial average dipped 26.51 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,977.24.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 3.79 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,087.79.
The Nasdaq composite index gave up 10.44 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,895.79.
For the year:
The Dow is up 552.21 points, or 3.2 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 43.85 points, or 2.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 111.62 points, or 2.2 percent.
