The Latest: Bond set for suspect in students' fatal shooting

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Latest on a Baton Rouge shooting that killed two 19-year-old Southern University students (all times local):

1 p.m.

A man suspected of initiating a shootout that killed two 19-year-old Southern University students has been ordered held on $90,000 bond at a Baton Rouge jail.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore III said state District Court Judge Beau Higginbotham set bond Monday for 22-year-old Ernest Bernard Felton, of Miami.

Felton was arrested Sunday on charges of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon in the shooting of a 24-year-old man, whose wounds weren't considered life-threatening.

Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Don Coppola said Lashuntae Benton, of Lake Charles, and Annette January, of Gary, Indiana, were killed during the exchange of gunfire between Felton and the 24-year-old man early Sunday. Coppola said it appears the women were "innocent bystanders" caught in the crossfire.

A witness told police that Felton initiated the shooting. Investigators were awaiting results of ballistic analysis to determine who's responsible for fatally shooting the women.

A man suspected of initiating a shootout that killed two 19-year-old Southern University students outside a Baton Rouge apartment complex was a member of the school's football team in 2012.

Assistant athletics director Christopher Jones said the suspect in Sunday's shooting — 22-year-old Ernest Bernard Felton, of Miami — never played in a game for Southern and wasn't brought back to the team following its 2012 season.

Police arrested Felton on charges of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon in the shooting of a 24-year-old man who was at a hospital with wounds that aren't considered life-threatening. Police said Felton and the 24-year-old man exchanged gunfire, but a witness told investigators that Felton initiated the shooting.

Investigators were awaiting results of ballistic analysis to determine who's responsible for fatally shooting Lashuntae Benton, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Annette January, of Gary, Indiana.
