Stocks ended mostly unchanged Monday as investors waited for first-quarter company earnings to start rolling in. Overseas markets gained as investors hoped for more stimulus in China, the world's second-largest economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 20.55 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,556.41.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 5.61 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,041.99.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 17.29 points, or less than 0.4 percent, to 4,833.40.
For the year:
The Dow is up 131.38 points, or 0.8 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 1.95 points, or 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 174.01 points, or 3.5 percent.
