CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina firefighter has died after being struck by a fire engine while responding to a house fire.

Conway Fire Chief Le Hendrick said Christopher Gene Ray died Sunday afternoon while responding to a structure fire. He said Monday he will not answer any more questions about Ray's death until the state Highway Patrol finishes its investigation.

Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins says Ray had been riding on a Conway fire engine when he fell off and was struck as the fire truck reversed over him at the fire scene. A special team of troopers is investigating the death.

Hendrick says Ray was a firefighter for six years
