LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities are searching for someone who left a puppy tied to a plastic shovel to drown on a Los Angeles-area beach.
The body of the brown-and-white terrier mix was found Friday by canoe paddlers at Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey.
One paddler, David Carpenter, tells KTTV-TV (http://bit.ly/1PiJ6mc ) that the plastic shovel was thrust through the dog's collar and into the sand. He suspects someone held the dog down until it drowned because the puppy would have been able to pull the lightweight shovel from the sand.
He calls it an unfathomable act of cruelty.
There's no word on a motive.
The dog had a registration tag that could lead to the owner.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and animal control officials are investigating.
