Film academy meeting to discuss diversity, Oscars

NEW YORK (AP) — The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors is meeting Tuesday to discuss the group's much-debated diversity initiatives and an Oscars ceremony where ratings sunk to an eight-year low.

The 51-member board is meeting for the first time since Jan. 21, when it unanimously voted on a series of steps to diversify the academy's largely white and male membership amid a storm of criticism over two straight years of all-white acting nominees.

But since that announcement, many questions have arisen over whether the planned changes contradict the academy's own bylaws, and whether they unfairly punish older members, many of whom would lose their voting privileges. Facing an uproar from some academy members, the organization has since attempted to clarify how out-of-work members would be denied from voting.
