The Latest: Escaped New Mexico inmate 'literally gave up'

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The Latest on the escape of two New Mexico inmates who fled from a prison van (all times local):

3:35 p.m.

Police say a convict who escaped a prison transport van surrendered peacefully after being found in an Albuquerque apartment.

Albuquerque police spokesman Simon Drobik says Lionel Clah walked out the front door Saturday and "literally just gave up" as officers were waiting for tactical units.

The woman who lives in the apartment called police around noon and said she believed Clah was in her home.

Drobik says authorities do not know if the two are acquainted.

Clah was one of two inmates who slipped away from prison guards while traveling Wednesday night between Roswell and Las Cruces.

Albuquerque police say the second of two convicts who escaped from a fortified prison transport van is now in custody.

Police spokesman Simon Drobik said Saturday that officers located Lionel Clah in a northeastern area of the city.

Clah's capture comes less than a day after the capture of the other inmate, convicted murderer Joseph Cruz.

Cruz was also found in Albuquerque.

Authorities continued Saturday to search for the second of two convicts who escaped from a fortified transport van in New Mexico.

New Mexico State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service captured convicted murderer Joseph Cruz on Friday in Albuquerque, but Lionel Clah remains at large.

Meanwhile, state police have arrested Cruz's sister, 38-year-old Olivia Cruz.

They say the woman had an outstanding warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

They are investigating whether she was involved in the men's escape.

Clah is convicted of armed robbery and other crimes.
