NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a driver escaped on foot after fleeing from police in his vehicle across several Southern California suburbs with a woman and two young children and then staging an hours-long standoff.
The pursuit, carried live on TV, began around 5 p.m. Monday in Orange County and continued through several cities.
After about two hours the driver parked his SUV on the side of a Newport Beach Road and a standoff ensued, during which he and the children exited the vehicle several times.
Occasionally the driver could be seen speaking on a cellphone with police.
The Orange County Register reports that just after 10 p.m., the suspect fled on foot and was not immediately captured.
California Highway Patrol officer Florentino Olivera says the woman and children were found uninjured.
The paper says the man is a domestic violence suspect.
