FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on the California trial of a man charged with abducting and raping a teenager he later married and impregnated (all times local):
A woman whose former boyfriend is charged with raping and abducting her teenage daughter more than a decade ago says she doesn't remember telling police she'd overhead them planning to leave home together.
The woman was cross-examined Tuesday by Isidro Garcia's lawyer.
The woman said she didn't remember saying her daughter had sided with Garcia during family arguments in 2004.
Prosecutors say Garcia abducted the girl after a family fight and she remained with him out of fear.
Garcia says the 15-year old left willingly and married him of her own choosing years later.
The couple were together for a decade and had a daughter before the woman went to the police in 2014.
A woman has testified that a former boyfriend charged with raping and kidnapping her teenage daughter called and told her he wouldn't bring back the girl after a fight at the family's apartment.
The mother testified Tuesday in the trial of 42-year-old Isidro Garcia, who says the 15-year-old girl ran away with him willingly in 2004.
The woman says she told Garcia that day that he should leave the apartment in Santa Ana or she would leave with her three daughters.
She says Garcia hit her, then her eldest daughter fled and Garcia followed. She says he later called to say he had the girl.
Authorities say the girl stayed with Garcia for a decade, married him and bore his child under a fake name. She went to police in 2014.
A woman has testified that a former boyfriend who's charged with raping and kidnapping her teenage daughter started to show a preference for the girl and began buying her clothing and shoes soon after she arrived in California from Mexico.
The woman took the stand Tuesday in the trial of 42-year-old Isidro Garcia, who's charged with abducting her 15-year-old daughter in 2004. Garcia says the girl ran away with him willingly.
Authorities say the girl stayed with Garcia for a decade, married him and bore his child under a fake name. They say Garcia told her she would be arrested and deported if she left.
She went to police in 2014 after reconnecting with family on social media.
The mother testified that she and Garcia would fight often after her two older daughters arrived from Mexico.
Testimony is expected to begin Tuesday in the trial of a man charged with raping and abducting his girlfriend's 15-year-old daughter, but he says the teen ran away with him willingly and eventually married him and bore his child.
Relatives of the girl, now an adult, are expected to testify about how she disappeared in 2004 with now-42-year-old Isidro Garcia after a fight at the family's apartment Santa Ana, California.
Prosecutors say Garcia forced the girl to stay with him, telling her she would be arrested and deported if she dared leave, and beating her when she tried.
Garcia's lawyer says his client's wife fabricated the abduction story in 2014 when she regretted her choice and wanted to reconnect with family.
