Key events in the escape and hunt for 3 California inmates

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Key dates and events in the escape and hunt for three California inmates who broke out of a maximum security jail using a Google Earth map, cutting tools and a rope made of bed linens. Hossein Nayeri, 37, Jonathan Tieu, 20, and Bac Duong, 43, were all back in custody Saturday after Nayeri and Tieu were arrested in San Francisco. Duong turned himself in Friday.

— Friday, Jan. 22, 4:45 a.m.: Nayeri, Tieu and Duong are last seen at an early morning head count in the Men's Central Jail in Santa Ana.

— Friday, Jan. 22, 5 a.m.: Nayeri, Tieu and Duong saw through a metal grate, crawl through a plumbing tunnel to the jail's roof and rappel four stories to freedom using a rope made of bedsheets.

— Friday, Jan. 22, 5:15 a.m.: Nayeri, Tieu and Duong are picked up in Santa Ana by an accomplice and driven to homes in three Orange County cities.

— Friday, Jan. 22, 9 p.m.: Jail staff realizes the three men are missing during an evening head count.

— Friday, Jan. 22, 9:30 p.m.: Nayeri, Tieu and Duong take a taxi to a store in Rosemead. Two hours later, Duong puts a gun to the taxi driver's ribcage and kidnaps him.

— Saturday, Jan. 23: Authorities say Duong steals a white GMC van after responding to a Craigslist ad. Search efforts are focused on Southern California. The fugitives get haircuts purportedly to change their appearance.

— Tuesday, Jan. 26: Tieu mails a letter to his mother from a post office in Orange County in what authorities say was a plan to distract investigators before driving to Northern California. They stay at a motel in San Jose.

— Tuesday, Jan. 26: Prosecutors charge Loc Ba Nguyen with felony counts, including sending a useful aid to escape from a jail. Nguyen's relationship to the jail or the inmates is unclear. He will be arraigned next month.

— Wednesday, Jan. 27: Nayeri and Duong get into a fistfight in the motel about whether to kill the taxi driver and bury his body.

— Thursday, Jan. 28: Nayeri and Tieu leave the hotel to get the van windows tinted. Duong and the taxi driver return to Southern California, spending the night in Rosemead before heading to Orange County the next morning.

— Thursday, Jan. 28: Authorities arrest ESL language teacher Nooshafarin Ravaghi and book her into jail for investigation of the escape. Authorities say she provided maps to Nayeri of the facility. Prosecutors later declined to file charges, saying there was insufficient evidence.

— Thursday, Jan. 28: Law enforcement conduct raids of suspected gang locations in Westminster.

— Friday, Jan. 29: Duong walks into an auto repair shop in Santa Ana and says he wants to surrender. The hunt shifts to the north after Duong tells investigators he was with Nayeri and Tieu in San Jose as recently as Thursday afternoon.

— Saturday, Jan. 30: Nayeri and Tieu are arrested in San Francisco after a tipster spots the white van parked near a Whole Foods Market.
