TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Georgian officials say a citizen from the country's southwestern region has been killed while fighting for the Islamic State group.
Nino Giozgobiani, press secretary for Georgia's security services, confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday that a man from the Adjara region near the Turkish border left to join the extremists over a year ago and was recently killed in fighting.
Khicha Gobadze is one of an estimated 100 Georgians who have joined the Islamic State group; approximately 15 of the fighters reportedly have been killed.
Last week, Georgian media reported that two men from the country's Pankisi Gorge region were killed while fighting for IS.
Another former Pankisi resident, Tarkhan Batirashvili, has become one of the top commanders of the Islamic State group under the name Omar al Shishani.
