LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) — A 7-year-old boy has died after he and his brother were attacked by a dog in North Carolina.

Local media outlets report that Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said in a news release the attack happened at around 11:20 a.m. Sunday at a home west of Lumberton.

Sealey says emergency responders found two brothers suffering from dog bites. Talen West was unresponsive, and the sheriff says he had "severe puncture wounds" on his body.

His 8-year-old brother was bitten in the lower body. Both boys were taken to the hospital, and Talen died. Jaylen West was treated and released.

Authorities say the dog belonged to neighbors and was found dead at the scene. It was sent to a veterinarian to evaluate the cause of death.
