MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — A local group in South Carolina wants to rebrand the Atlantic Beach Bikefest as the Unity Bikefest and promoting it as an event for all races.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports (http://bit.ly/1P7W7Uf ) that the North Myrtle Drag Strip requested $330,000 in Myrtle Beach accommodations tax money for a marketing campaign and a concert.
A city advisory committee recommended the request be denied. Organizer Cathy Gore says her group was not prepared to answer all the committee's questions.
The Bikefest is held each Memorial Day weekend in the predominantly black community of Atlantic Beach.
Gore says her group plans a smaller-scale marketing effort to combat the negative images of the Bikefest.
Three people were killed in eight separate shootings during the 2014 Bikefest. There were no shooting deaths last year.
