PINETOPS, N.C. (AP) — Five young people have been arrested after wildlife officers found more than two dozen dead deer in eastern North Carolina.
Lt. Sam Craft with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission told WRAL-TV (http://bit.ly/1RhQB3J) that the 26 deer were found Sunday after officers received a tip.
Craft said 16 heads, mostly from bucks, were found at a home in Pinetops, about 50 miles east of Raleigh. Ten other deer were found in various fields around Edgecombe County.
Eighteen-year-old Christopher Jernigan of Elm City, 19-year-old Timothy Stamatis and three juveniles are charged with night hunting. The juveniles' names haven't been released.
The suspects could be fined and lose their hunting licenses for two years. It isn't clear whether the suspects have attorneys to comment on the charges.
Deer-hunting season ended Jan. 1.
