CHICAGO (AP) — An Iowa woman was killed and four other passengers were injured in a Burlington Trailways bus accident on Interstate 55 in Chicago on early Monday, Illinois State Police said.
The bus was carrying 33 passengers when it lost control at 6:40 a.m. and struck a construction arrow board sign, police said. Burlington Trailways said the bus departed Omaha, Nebraska, on Sunday evening for downtown Chicago. The bus line said it is "fully cooperating" with law enforcement.
The driver, who state police identified as a 53-year-old man from Omaha, told authorities he was trying to avoid a pickup truck that moved into the bus' lane as the bus was getting ready to exit, Burlington Trailways officials said. They also said their onboard GPS system shows the bus was traveling 49 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The victim was identified as 21-year-old Nicole M. Underwood of Des Moines. The four other passengers had injuries that were not life-threatening and were taken to hospitals.
The bus will be towed to a secure facility for investigators to inspect in, bus company officials said. Burlington Trailways said it is company policy for any driver it employs to undergo a drug test after an accident.
The crash is under investigation.
