NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are drifting between small gains and losses in quiet trading ahead of the Christmas holiday.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 26 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,574 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time Thursday.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged down a point to 2,062. The Nasdaq composite was up five points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,050.
Nike fell 1 percent, the most in the Dow average.
The price of crude oil rose half a percent to $38 a barrel in New York.
Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.26 percent.
Trading will close early Thursday ahead of Christmas and will remain closed on Friday.
