COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A coroner says the student who died after jumping into a lake on the Ohio State University campus broke his neck.
Franklin County Coroner Anahi Ortiz said Thursday that preliminary autopsy results show 22-year-old Austin Singletary, of Dayton, suffered a fracture of his C-5 vertebra, in the neck area, during the plunge into Mirror Lake on Wednesday.
He was participating in a student-led lake jump that's become a tradition to mark the Ohio State-Michigan football rivalry.
Ortiz says additional testing will be conducted to make a final determination of what caused Singletary's death.
Ohio State says it is moving to end the annual lake jump, which has raised safety concerns for the school. It has been a tradition for throngs of students since roughly the 1990s.
