CAYCE, S.C. (AP) — A man who fired on South Carolina officers who were trying to arrest him on drug-related charges was shot and killed by the officers early Tuesday, a city spokeswoman said.
The confrontation occurred around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, said Ashley Hunter, a spokeswoman for the city of Cayce, just west of Columbia.
One officer was shot and wounded and the other officer was hurt in the struggle. Both officers were taken to a local hospital and were expected to fully recover, Hunter said.
Hunter said both officers were white men. State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said the dead suspect was black. The names of those involved have not been released.
SLED is investigating the shooting, the 45th time this year that officers have fired their weapons at a suspect in South Carolina.
There were 42 shootings involving police in South Carolina last year.
