PHELAN, Calif. (AP) — A 5-year-old San Bernardino County boy who crawled through a smoke-filled hall to save his grandmother during a fire has been honored for heroism.
The San Bernardino Sun (http://bit.ly/1HvCTGk ) says Nathaniel Stocks, who lives near Phelan, received a plaque Monday from county Fire Chief Mark Hartwig.
Fire officials say a space heater in the boy's room started a blaze Saturday morning. Nathaniel woke up coughing from the smoke, got out of bed and crawled beneath the smoke level up a hallway to wake his sleeping grandmother.
They met firefighters outside the home. Firefighters rescued the family's Chihuahua and quickly doused the fire.
Authorities say Nathaniel and his school group had visited a fire station two days earlier, where he'd learned fire safety techniques — including crawling under smoke.
