NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors have charged two teenage inmates with slashing a New York City jail guard in the face, leaving him with 22 stitches.
Eighteen-year-old William Whitfield and 19-year-old Darnell Green were arraigned Friday in Bronx Criminal Court on assault and other charges. They didn't enter pleas. Their attorneys didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.
Prosecutors say in court papers that Green put Rikers Island jail guard Ray Calderon in a headlock from behind on Thursday as Whitfield approached with a sharp object.
They say Calderon was slashed on the left side of his face along his forehead, cheek and ear. He received 22 stitches to his face and four to his right wrist.
The attack comes as city officials struggle to quell jailhouse violence, particularly among young adult and teenage inmates.
