ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after firing at an officer in a gun fight that left an 8-year-old girl with a graze wound.

Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni says Dante Allen was charged Thursday with attempted murder and weapons offenses.

Prosecutors say an Asbury Park patrolman stopped Allen on Wednesday night, felt a gun during a search and chased the suspect when he fled. Prosecutors say Allen fired toward the officer, who returned fire and wounded Allen. The suspect's injuries were not life-threatening injuries and the officer wasn't hurt.

It wasn't known which bullet entered the house and struck the girl while she was watching TV. She was treated and released from a hospital Wednesday night.

It wasn't immediately clear if Allen had an attorney to comment on the charges.
