NEW YORK (AP) — Police have identified the construction worker killed in a building collapse in midtown Manhattan.
They say 25-year-old Pedro Bacilio of Brooklyn was killed when a building on West 38th Street caved in Friday. Attempts to reach Bacilio's family were not immediately successful Saturday.
City building investigators remain at the site probing the cause of the collapse. Another worker was trapped in the rubble for three hours before firefighters could rescue him.
The Department of Buildings said property owner Fortuna Realty Group had all the necessary permits for the demolition. The building was being taken down to make way for a luxury hotel.
Fortuna has referred calls about the collapse to demolition company Northeast Service Interiors. Its lawyer says the collapse was "an unexplainable accident" and company officials are in mourning.
