MAYSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A couple tried desperately to save their five children from a house consumed in flames, but the heat and the smoke were too much for one of them.
Authorities say Lori Doppelheuer died Tuesday inside the 19th century row house with three of the children: 10-year-old Christopher Kearney, 3-year-old Eagan Hargis, and 20-month-old Kieran Hargis.
Beverly Hargis said her son Chris Hargis was able to scoop up a 15-year-old girl and a 7-year-old girl, cover them with blankets, and rush them to safety.
The nighttime fire gutted three row houses and damaged two others. Also killed was a neighbor of the couple identified as 68-year-old Larry R. Brickels.
