PHILADELPHIA (AP) — More than 60 personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits filed after the deadly May derailment of an Amtrak Train in Philadelphia will be heard by a single judge in the city.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/1VRAXyo ) the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation selected federal Judge Legrome Davis to oversee the cases.

More than 30 lawsuits have been filed in Philadelphia. The rest were consolidated after attorneys for the Philadelphia plaintiffs and Amtrak argued that everyone would benefit from having one judge rule on all pretrial questions.

Amtrak says the company will not oppose claims for compensatory damages. Several suits also seek punitive damages.

Eight people were killed and more than 200 were injured when the train entered a sharp curve at more than twice the 50 mph speed limit.
