LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — When an 82-year-old woman saw a man leaving her home, he claimed he had scared off a burglar. As the two headed to the sheriff's department to report the purported break-in, the man commandeered and stole her SUV.
Dona Ana County sheriff's officials said the incident occurred Monday and they were still looking for the man.
It began when the woman was mowing her lawn and saw a man leaving her Las Cruces-area home.
He told her he'd scared off a burglar. They later headed for the sheriff's department with the woman at the wheel. The man forced her into the passenger seat and took over driving.
The woman escaped when they stopped at a convenience store. A suspicious clerk called police and the suspect drove off in the SUV.
