HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — An official says hundreds of students failed to show up for class at a high school in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, after several suicide notes were found from a student who said he was going to kill himself on campus.

Hoover High School spokesman Jason Gaston tells Al.com (http://bit.ly/1Zm8Uq5 ) about 600 of the school's 2,950 students were marked absent Friday.

Police Capt. Gregg Rector says identical suicide notes were found Monday in the boys' restrooms on each floor of the school. Rector says the writer threatened to commit suicide on campus Friday.

Police say the student was identified Thursday and authorities were getting him help. Gaston says school officials respect the decision of those parents who decided to keep students home Friday.
