Umbrellas were a theme in images of daily life Asia last week, with protesters in Hong Kong marking the one-year anniversary of the pro-democracy "Umbrella Movement" that shut down parts of the bustling city for weeks. Rows of umbrellas were on display in Seoul for a fund-raising campaign for underprivileged children, while two women chatted in the doorway during a rain shower in Beijing.

In other glimpses from around the region, Chinese paramilitary police stood in formation in Tiananmen Square on the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Rainy season was in full swing in Thailand, dousing a motorcyclist, while in Manadaly, Myanmar, colorful balloons were on sale by the roadside.

In an Indian village, a woman made cow dung cakes even as the government plans to boost solar, wind and other renewable energy capacity in the next five years to 175 gigawatts.

Haze shrouded parts of Malaysia, thanks to smoke drifting across from illegal land clearing in Indonesia.

And in tennis action, Italy's Camila Giorgi returned a ball at the China Open.
