US colleges seek better integration for Chinese students

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — American universities that have seen a huge rise in the enrollment of Chinese students are devising new strategies to help them integrate on campus.

While students of similar backgrounds naturally flock together anywhere, the issue is being discussed with urgency in relation to Chinese students because of their sheer numbers. On American campuses, where they number in the hundreds or thousands, it is easier for them to find friends who speak the same native language and form insular communities.

The University of Illinois this fall began broadcasting football games in Mandarin.

Several schools hold pre-departure orientation sessions in Chinese cities. A Purdue University official says incoming freshmen begin hearing about the importance of engaging with other students even before they arrive in Indiana.
