NEW YORK (AP) — Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards were peppered with commercials warning young adults about the dangers of drugs — but during the show itself, drug references were almost as predominant as the music.
Here's a look at six times drugs were mentioned during the live show, hosted by its main pusher, Miley Cyrus.
— Taking a page from Ellen DeGeneres' book and using a selfie stick to take a massive photo of herself and others, Cyrus told the audience, "Everyone say, 'Marijuana!'"
— In a skit, Cyrus grubs on pot brownies backstage with marijuana maven Snoop Dogg.
— During a typical Kanye West rant as he accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Yeezus informs the audience that, "Yes, I rolled up a little something" before taking the stage.
— Following West's speech, Cyrus offered tips on smoking etiquette to the rapper: "Bro, there is some award show etiquette, I mean, pass that (joint)."
— In another skit, Cyrus' father, Billy Ray Cyrus, says goodnight to his daughter and friends and they begin lighting up what appears to be marijuana.
— Cyrus, who said MTV wouldn't let her perform but allowed her to host instead after the disastrous 2013 VMAs, closed the 2015 show with a performance of new song called "Dooo It!" It starts with a statement of the obvious, "Yeah, I smoke pot."
— BONUS: Backstage after the VMAs ended, Cyrus had a lit joint and passed it around to photographers. "Because you're all my friends, and my song is kinda, sorta about the love of marijuana and the love of humankind, I brought a little joint if anyone would like any. Anyone?"
