Tropical Storm Fred moving away from Cape Verde Islands

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Fred is moving farther away from the Cape Verde Islands and is expected to weaken.

The storm's maximum sustained winds Tuesday afternoon are near 50 mph (80 kph).

Fred is centered about 330 miles (531 kilometers) northwest of the Cape Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest near 12 mph (19 kph). Fred is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by late Wednesday.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Hurricane Jimena has weakened but remains a powerful Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds near 120 mph (193 kph). Jimena is centered about 1,000 miles (1609 kilometers) east of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving west near 10 mph (16 kph).

Also in the Pacific, a tropical depression is expected to become a tropical storm later in the day. The depression has maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph). It's centered about 695 miles (1118 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and is moving west-northwest near 9 mph (14.48 kph).
