NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A portion of Newark Liberty International Airport was evacuated Sunday night after police said a man made his way into a secure hallway.
It happened around 7 p.m. in Terminal C, according to Port Authority Police Department spokesman Joe Pentangelo.
Pentangelo said the man had entered the hallway through an exit door and was confronted by Customs and Border Protection agents.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken into police custody.
Joe Manzelli said he was waiting to pick up his wife near a security checkpoint at the airport when he heard someone yelling, "stop!" and then saw a man running into the terminal.
He said he could see several bags dropped in the exit and then a drove of police officers heading into the terminal. About five minutes later, authorities began to evacuate the area, he said.
Manzelli said he saw the man led back to the screening area, where he was "just rambling about being afraid of being shot and money."
Pentangelo said a portion of the airport was evacuated while officers with police dogs conducted a security sweep.
