NEW YORK (AP) — Researchers have linked a sophisticated hacking scheme targeting Iranian dissidents back to Iran.
A report released Thursday by the Citizen Lab, a privately funded research group based at the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs, describes how hackers used phone and text message-based phishing to try to get around the security of Google's Gmail.
The report says the attacks studied by the Citizen Lab were very similar to others connected to Iranian hackers.
They also show how politically motivated hackers are now adopting tactics previously associated with financially motivated attacks.
In addition, the report says that these kinds of attacks are increasing. It emphasizes the importance of using additional layers of security on top of passwords in email communications.
