PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Fans of author H.P. Lovecraft are marking his 125th birthday with a four-day festival and conference in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island.

The NecronomiCon (NEH'-kroh-NOM'-ih-kon) begins Thursday with an opening ceremony at the First Baptist Church in America.

Other events include a birthday party with music and movies in downtown Providence.

Lovecraft was born on Aug. 20, 1890. He lived most of his life in Providence and died penniless in 1937. Decades later, fans put up a gravestone that bears the words "I am Providence."

His stories often featured Providence or other New England towns.

Lovecraft's work was known as "cosmic horror." It has been an influence on other horror and science-fiction writers such as Stephen King, movies such as "Alien" and bands including Metallica.
