LOS ANGELES (AP) — Animal lovers will be able get a new sidekick for next to nothing in the push to help more than 400 animal shelters in the U.S. and Puerto Rico find homes for wayward pets.
On Saturday, those shelters will offer free or reduced-cost adoptions or waive pet spaying and neutering fees. The national NBC initiative comes after litters of unwanted cats and dogs born this spring have filled up shelter space.
Local NBC and Telemundo stations in several cities will air special programming and urge viewers to use the hashtag #ClearTheShelters on social media, like celebrities Meredith Vieira and Mario Lopez.
NBC and Telemundo started the Clear the Shelters campaign last year in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where dozens of shelters placed more than 2,200 animals.
